Vienna Schwechat is about 20km from the city. You know the drill:
CAT - City Airport Train - Direct to Wien Mitte in 16 minutes, every 30 minutes, around 15 euros. Still the fastest and most civilised way in.
S7 regional train - Around 4 euros, takes about 25 minutes. Same destination, just cheaper.
Uber or Bolt - Reliable and usually cheaper than a taxi. Book from the app before you walk outside.
⚠️ Taxi warning
Do not take the taxis from the Schwechat rank outside arrivals. They are notorious for charging roughly double the going rate. Stick to Uber, Bolt, or a pre-booked taxi. If in doubt, check with Armando.
🚌 Driving from nearby cities
Budapest - About 2.5 hours via the A4. Bratislava - About 1 hour. Basically next door. Salzburg - About 3 hours via the A1 Westautobahn. Munich - About 4 hours via Salzburg. Attersee - About 2.5 hours via Salzburg. Yes, we know where you come from. 😉
🚆 By train
Most international trains arrive at Wien Hauptbahnhof on U1. Some Western routes use Wien Westbahnhof on U3 and U6. You remember how this works.
🚌 Getting around
🚊 Public transport - you remember this
Vienna's U-Bahn, trams, and buses are still excellent - probably even better than when you lived here. The network is largely the same, just with newer trains and a proper app. A single ticket costs 2.40 euros, a 24-hour pass around 8 euros. Download the Wiener Linien app for routes and tickets. Validate before boarding - inspectors still exist and still have no sense of humour.
🚖 Taxis and rideshare
Uber and Bolt both operate in Vienna and are reliable. Taxi 40100 is still the main local company if you prefer to call. For the Sunday evening return from Kahlenberg, a pre-booked car is the most practical option.
🚗 Parking - the whole city is Kurzparkzone
This one catches people out: all districts in Vienna are a Kurzparkzone, not just the inner ones. Monday to Friday between 9am and 10pm, you must display a Parkschein wherever you park on the street. Maximum stay is usually 2 hours.
The easiest solution is the Handy Parken app - you activate parking on your phone when you arrive and deactivate when you leave. No running back to stick a paper voucher on the windscreen. Highly recommended.
💡 Getting to Saturday's party
Juan and Nassim's place has parking outside - so if you are driving, you are fine. For those without a car, we are organising lifts from U4 station Heiligenstadt. The venue is a bit further out of the city in Klosterneuburg, but trust us - it is very much worth the short trip out. Reach out to the committee if you need a lift.
🏠 Where to stay
🏠 You know this city
You lived here. You know the neighbourhoods. For easy access to reunion venues, the 1st, 2nd, or 22nd districts put you closest to the action. The U-Bahn will get you everywhere else.
👥 Staying with classmates
A couple of local classmates have offered to host guests. If you haven't sorted accommodation yet and waking up at a fellow Ninetyoner's place sounds like a good start to the reunion, reach out to the committee and we will make the connection.
Parking available outside the house. For those without a car, lifts from U4 station Heiligenstadt are being organised - contact the committee to coordinate.
